Air Force Testing New Maternity Uniforms
In the final 2021 published last week In a version of the fiscal national defense bill, lawmakers are calling on the Defense Department to implement a pilot program that would issue maternity uniforms and related items to pregnant women on a temporary, as-needed basis.
Under the wording of the proposed legislation, the Defense Logistics Agency, which issues uniforms and equipment to the armed services, would coordinate with each service secretary to analyze what items pregnant soldiers need and how much to issue them.
The secretaries could set up an office where women could drop off items that no longer need cleaning or repair until the uniforms are reissued to other mothers-to-be, the bill said.
The bill also mandates that maternity uniforms not be treated with insecticidal chemicals such as permethrin. Although permethrin is considered relatively safe for pregnant women, its use during pregnancy is recommended only if the benefits outweigh the risks.

One of the goals of the pilot program, according to lawmakers, is to study whether proper uniforms allow women to do their jobs more effectively around pregnant women.
The NDAA requires that each agency no later than 2025 September 30 report on their findings. Lawmakers are awaiting recommendations from senior officials, descriptions of the program's successes and failures, and a decision on whether to extend it beyond its intended duration. end date. The year is 2026.
Among other things, the analysis would show whether the bill's program increased costs, saved taxpayer dollars, and how it differed from the cost of "providing benefits to members to purchase such items."
The services have recently made several policy changes to better retain women in the services and enable them to work effectively.

The Air Force launched the project in 2019 to gather women's perspectives to provide better uniforms, including maternity uniforms, flight suits and body armor.
Then-Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein launched an initiative to redesign women's uniforms after years of inadequate clothing. These efforts were also supported by the Air Department's Barrier Analysis Task Force, part of the Women's Initiatives Team, which helped promote changes to outdated or restrictive policies.
Society as a whole responds to the increased number of women in the ranks by improving dress and appearance practices.
According to USA Today in October report, women make up about 21% of the Air Force; 20.2% fleet; 15.4% military personnel; and 9% of Marines.
